Rickards Captures First District Title Since 2001

The Rickards Raiders clinched the 5A district championship last night by defeating the Godby Cougars 34-14. The Raiders haven’t  won a district title in 15 years, but have been in the playoffs. Head Coach Quintin Lewis, a 1997 graduate of Rickards, has achieved one of his goals ,taking the program to new heights, by resoundingly defeating crosstown rival and district foe, Godby.

The game started with both teams going back and forth unable to score, until the Raiders snapped  the ball over the punter’s head with a Cougar recovering it in the end zone. The kicker missed the extra point; making the score  6-0 Godby. The Cougars return the favor by fumbling on their own 26 that led to a 2 yard touchdown run by Raider running back, Jaden Merritt missed the extra point; making the score 6-6 with 57 seconds in the second quarter. After teams exchange possession with 6:57 in the 2nd quarter Raider punt returner Javon Wooten electrified the fans with a 85 yard return 2pt  conversion good . The Cougars refused to go away quietly by driving 64 yards to score on a 2 yard dump pass from Rishawn McKay to Kamari Young 2pt conversion good. The Raider offense drove the ball right down the field; but were turned back by the Cougar defense with an interception by Kean Thomas going into the half tied 14-14.

Half way through the third quarter Raider quarterback DJ Phillips rolls left and hits Marcus Riley for a 90 yard touchdown strike. The conversion was good with  7:56 left in the quarter. The score being 21-14.The 4th quarter was all Raiders, turning a close game into route. Defensive Back Anferrnee  Simmons picks off an errant  McKay pass and returns it 57 yards; opening up the lead 28-14 with 9:28 left in the game. Rickards  final score came with 6:50 left in the quarter when DJ Phillips sealed it with a 70 yard touchdown scramble 34-14 Raiders.
