Madison County 2009 Team Preview

Madison County High School Mascot: Cowboys              madisoncountyhelmet12

Class 2A District 1

2008 Record 9-0

District 3-0

Head Coach: Frankie Carroll

Team  2009 Outlook: One of the states perennial power-house programs looks to be in a re-building year. This fact, however, didn’t seem to affect the voters decision though. Madison is still Madison. In most folks eyes, one should never underestimate them. This is one of the youngest teams that the Cowboys have had in recent years. The lost of  FSU signees RB Chris Thompson and DT Jacobi McDaniel didn’t leave the cupboard completely bare. The offense will be lead by Juniors QB Kelvin Singletary and RB Marterius McDaniel (younger brother Of Jacobi McDaniel). On defense, Juniors LB Charles Phillips and LB Coydrick Williams along with senior DB Will Turner will be poised to keep the winning tradition going.

Strengths: Experienced coaching staffthompsonx

Weakness: Youth on offense and defense

Players to Watch: CB Justin Hampton, CB Will Turner, TE John Sirmon , OL Tomas Bellamy, QB Kelvin Singletary, FB Dantonio Denson, LB Charles Phillips, LB Coydrick Williams, DB Jermaine Hart, RB Marterius McDaniel, OL Ladonte Gibson

Florida High 2009 Team Preview

Florida State University High School Mascot: Seminoles    floridahighhelmet11

Class 2B District 2

2008 Record 9-1

District 3-0

Head Coach: Jarrod Hickman

Team 2009 Outlook: The ‘Noles are have been a consistent 2b stalwart force in the playoffs, and it shouldn’t be any different this season. The voters really thought highly of this team. With one of the states best kickers in Chase Vandoffs on offense and what looks to be one of the best secondaries in the Tallahassee area, the Noles are poised to win their share of close games. Coach Hickman always has a few surprises up his sleeve. Opponents beware. They could move up the rankings by season’s end.

Strengths: Defense Secondary

Lawton Chiles High School Mascot: Timberwolves  chileshelmet11

Class 4A-District  3

2008 Record: 0-10

District record: 0-4

Head Coach: Barney Myers

Team 2009 Outlook: Last season the Timberwolves went 0-10, We don’t think new head coach Burney Myers will allow this group to repeat that. With weapons like Jaron Williams and Transfer (Pompano Beach Ely) WR Andre Gayle on offense, junior QB Bert Givens will be more than able to move the ball. Standout defender D.J. Price will force offensive coordinators to account for him all night long.

LB D.J. Price

LB D.J. Price

Strengths: Line backers and defensive line

Weakness: Learning a new offensive system

Players to Watch: LB D.J. Price, CB Nathan Snow, WR Andre Gayle, DT T.J. Marten, S Will Finley, LB/S Reggie Mitchell, QB Bert Givens, RB Jaron Williams

nfchelmet11North Florida Christian  School Mascot: Eagles

Class 1A  District 3

2008 Record 6-2

District 3-0

Head  Coach: Tim Cokley

Team 2009 Outlook: The Eagles, under Coach Cokley, from 1998 to 2001, owned the 1A trophy by winning 4 consecutive titles. QB Clint Trickett has been honing his passing skills all summer and looks like he is ready to lead this bunch to another explosive season behind a huge offensive line anchored by offensive lineman Drew Gentry. The defense will be lead by senior LB Josh Major and sophomore DB Travis Blanks. 2008 was a banner year for the Eagles, but they will not be satisfied until they make it back to Orlando.

QB Clint Trickett

Class 2A District 1

2008 Record:  4-5

District: 2-2

Head Coach: Rudy Hubbard

2009 Team Outlook: Rickards’ is blessed with talent on both sides of the ball and has a coach that knows what it takes to win. QB Terry Johnson and  RB Derrick Hudson are expected to give the offense a much needed punch. Defenders, LB Fred Griggs and DE Brandon Denmark, will lead a high intensity defense. Head Coach Rudy Hubbard worked this group hard over the summer and expects them make the playoffs for the first time in long while. The Raiders were only 4-5 last season their first year under Coach Hubbard. This could be their breakout year.

Leon High 2009 Team Preview

Leon

High School Mascot: Lions               leonhelmet11

Class 4A District 3

2008 Record  7-3

District 3-1

Head Coach: Bill Ragans

Team 2009 Outlook: The 2009 version of the Lions have a couple of familiar faces, seniors RB/DB Eric Williams and OL/DB Mack Helms. Williams did it all for the Lions last season by running, receiving and playing corner. He also contributed over 1500 yards of total offense. He will have to step it up this season to replace offensive weapons Dantin and Green. Helms will anchor on both sides of the line at tackle and nose guard, along with leading the newcomers on the line. Even though the defense will miss Mizzel and Carter, Coach Ragans (who is a defensive specialist) should have the lions ready. Last season this team made some giant steps with 8 wins

RB Eric Williams

after going 3-7 the year before. Don’t be surprised if they make a run deep into the playoffs.

Strengths: Offensive and Defensive line and running backs

Weakness: Youth at QB

Taylor County High School Mascot: Bulldogs  taylorcountyhelmet11

2008 Record   3-7

District 1-3

Head  Coach: Shane Boggs

Team  2009 Outlook: With a record of  3-7 last season, the Bulldogs look to improve with Quarterback  Ty Crowley at the helm. District competition is stiff and will be a big challenge. WR Reggie King and RB Tony Jackson are the headliners for the Bulldogs and Coach Boggs will depend heavily on them to lead his team.

West Gadsden High Mascot: Panthers

Class 1A District 2westgadsdenhelmet11

2008 Record  8-2

District 7-0

Head Coach: Antonio Bradwell

Team  2009 Outlook : At the beginning of the of the 2008 season no one had any idea that Coach Bradwell’s squad was prepared to have a 8-2 season. This year, like last, the verdict is still out. Replacing All-American defensive tackle Gary Brown and QB Antonio Bostic will be tough. This year’s version of the Panthers has our voters somewhere in the middle, thinking if it’s possible or not to repeat the success of last year. Newcomer WR La Rico Dickey and FB Dustin Chason will have to carry an inexperience group this fall.

Strengths: Team speed and athleticism

FAMU HIGH Offensive Line

Team 2009    Outlook : The 2009 version of the Baby Rattlers are an interesting group, with the loss of college signees RB  Donte Payne (North Carolina A&T, LB Willie Ferrell (FAMU) and Alex Williams (Ole Miss). The Rattlers won’t look the same. FAMU should be as good or better than last season, despite the losses. With QB Mike Melvin, RB Jordan Stanley, WR Leonard Barrington and OL Ian Howard, the offense should be explosive. The defense will be lead by SS Breil Hill, DE Alex Watson, DT Issac Manning and DT Derrick Holmes.

Players to Watch: QB Mike Melvin, SS Breil Hill, DE Alex Watson, DT  Issac Manning, RB Jordan Stanley, DT Derrick Holmes, Leonard Barrington, OL David Griffin, Ian Howard, DE  Ralph Monroe, Delmus Harrison, Phillip Kinnon

Amos P. Godby High Mascot: Cougars                     godbyhelmet11

Class 2A District 1

2008 Regular season record: 8-2

2008 District record : 4-0

Head Coach: Shelton Crews

Team 2009 Outlook: This season will not be an easy one, but coach Crews and staff are ready for the task. The replacements of QB A.J. Graham (Marshall) and WR Willie Downs will play a key role, but this year’s offense has more than a few players that can take up the slack. RB Lovorrie Johnson lead the team in rushing with over a 1000 yards and 10 touchdowns last season. Up front, Center Justin Norman and OT Montae Jones will open the holes on the offensive line. WR Chris St Hilaire and TE Michael Ethridge will be the targets in the Cougar passing attack. On the opposite side of the ball, the Cougar defense will be lead by NT Jericho Lee, who is the teams’ leading returning tackler, with 119 from the 2008 season. LB’s Rodney Busch, Quinton Allen and Montreal Barnes are big contributors-from last years state runner-up team. Senior DB William Davis will be called upon to lead the secondary. This football season the Cougars will be tested every week as they try to handle one of the toughest schedules in the in the Tallahassee area.

RB Lovorie Johnson #26

RB Lovorie Johnson #26

Players to Watch: TE/ DE Kamerin Davis, RB Lavorrie Johnson, TE Michael Etheridge, WR/DB William Davis, NT Jericho Lee, OLB Rodney Busch, OL Juwan Floyd, OL Montae Jones, C Justin Norman, WR/LB Quinton Allen, DE  Montreal Barnes

Strengths: Return 6 on offense and 7 on defense from a 12-3 team in 2008 that finished the season as the 3A State Runner-up. Godby Head Coach Shelton Crews stated that “We will be young at QB and LB.  If the kids at those positions progress we have a chance to be very successful. We lost some great players but we return a good nucleus of experienced players.”

Weaknesses: Young at QB and LB, tough schedule due to the realignment of the district and traditional foes that decided not to play them. Every team they play this year outside of their district is a 3A or 4A team. Seven of their ten games are against playoff teams in 2008.  Playing larger schools, the Cougars’ health has to be a concern.

Schedule: http://4quartersonline.com/updates/?p=76

Prediction: 8-2

Munroe Day School Mascot: Bobcats

2008 Record: 3-6

Head Coach: Joe Striplin

Team 2009 Outlook: One of the smaller schools in the region playing football; the Bobcats struggled this spring, loosing both jamboree games. This could be a long season for new head   coach Joe Striplin and it will take a while for  Munroe to compete in the Tallahassee area.

Strengths: Offensive Line

Weakness: Depth, Team speed

Class 4A District  3

2008 Regular season   record:  5-5

2008 District record: 2-2

Head Coach: Scott Klees

Team 2009 Outlook: The War Eagles were a playoff team, last season, in a tough 3A district. After making the move up to class 4A, the task has gotten a little tougher. Head Coach Scott Klees and his staff have their work cut out for them, by playing the likes of Lincoln and Leon in district 3. The success of the offense will depend on the efforts of OL John Cooper, RB Lorenzo Randolph along with a host of young players who are expected to contribute. On the defensive side of the ball, LB Tyler Schmidt and FS Antonio Kilpatrick will have to take charge.img_6759

Strengths: Team Speed, experienced offensive line

Weakness: Team Youth and inexperience on Defense.

Players to Watch: RB Will Thomas, DB Marshane Godbolt, QB Deonte Hutchinson, LB/OLTyler Schmidt, RBLorenzo Randolf , RB/LB E.J. Forbes  RB/FS Antonio Kilpatrick, RB /SS Tre McCullough,  OL John Cooper

Head Coach: Scott Anderson

Team 2009   Outlook : Last season the Jaguars barely missed the playoffs, losing in the play-in game against Rickards. This team could very well be a top 10 team by the end of the season. With RB Montez Fryson and NG Kelvin Ray leading the Jaguars they could pull a few upsets.

2008 Regular season record: 7-3

2008  District record: 3-1

Head Coach: Yusef  Shakir

Team 2009 Outlook: The Yusef Shakir era at Lincoln begins this fall with the former player and coach becoming the 6th head coach in school’s history. Shakir spent this summer preparing the Trojans to make a return trip to Orlando. The offense will be lead by QB Ryan White who with athletic ability and a strong arm will give opponents all they can handle. Other key players on offense are RB Buck Allen, RB Tony Moore and OL Cody Gibson. The defense should be the strength of Coach Shakir’s team. They will be lead by LB Mark Wilson, DT  Tre Watson and LB Tony Harris. Lincoln is favored to win their district and have a great chance to get back to the title game in December and possibly win it all.
