4Q Signing Day 2011: Leon’s Geoff Strickland signs with Sewanee

Leon added another member to the long list of 2011 area collegiate signees yesterday as defensive back and two-year varsity letterman Geoff Strickland committed to play football at Sewanee the University of the South in Leon’s famed Red & White Room. As head football coach Bill Regans addressed the large crowd of family and friends he stated that “This is a big occaision for Geoff and his family… It’s quite an accomplishment.”

Among Geoff’s family were his father, mother, grandmother and grandfather. Geoff’s dad Gene Strickland was elated with his son’s decision to play at Sewanee University which is located in Tennessee. “I feel fantastic!” Said Gene Strickland, father of Geoff. “It’s an academic package to play division III football and it’s a huge relief to see him (Geoff) go to a school of that caliber that he wants to go to.”

With a strong sense of urgency NFC Head Coach Robert Kraft paced around the Eagles practice on one of the hottest afternoons in May. Keeping a watchful eye on each 5 minute segment of the up-tempo session, Kraft was immersed in the foot-work and eye-movement of senior quarterback Matt Dobson. Kraft’s focus on the little things has had an effect on his players as well. “We have about 19 seniors this year and they’ve been working hard since Christmas”, Kraft said. “We’ve had a great off-season. And I contribute a lot of that to our seniors. This group has gotten a taste of what it takes to win it all.”

After a 6-4 season that saw North Florida Christian miss the playoffs for the first time since 1991, the Eagles were obviously more than ready to get back to work this spring. “When we lost our final game of the 2010 season, the following Monday we were right back at work getting prepared,” standout defensive back Travis Blanks said. NFC quarterback Matt Dobson also stated, “We’ve had a very long off-season, so it feels great to get back out here… The energy and enthusiasm is really up among the players.”

On a typical May afternoon in Tallahassee, temperatures can reach into the mid 90′s. With the weather being this hot the Godby Cougars took to this years spring practices looking to turn up the heat on their opponents this fall. “Anytime you get a chance to put the pads on and smell the grass, you’re always gonna have some fun…” said Godby assistant Head Coach Cleon MacFarlane. “We’ve speed things up a bit in practice and have given them more of a tempo so the kids are definitely excited about that.”

There was a strong showing of support at the annual Blue and White Game at Godby High School last Friday. A defensively physical game, the Cougars showed why they could be a dominant force in class 5A later this fall. Head Coach Ronnie Cottrell spoke about the teams improvement. “We’ve had a successful off-season and we’re better because of the carry over from last year. We have a lot of seniors coming back and they’ve put in a lot of effort with our strength coach working on agility and quickness.”
