By Jim Lamar • DEMOCRAT SPORTS EDITOR • April 9, 2010

Leon High offensive lineman Trey Braun committed to Georgia Tech on Friday afternoon.

Braun, a 6-foot-5, 280-pound junior, played on both the offensive and defensive lines at Leon as a junior. He recorded 47 tackles (21 solo, eight for loss) and three sacks.

Braun, whose father Mike is Leon’s offensive line coach and offensive coordinator, selected the Yellow Jackets over Arkansas, USF, UCF, East Carolina and Illinois (among others).

E.Gadsden names Fuller new football coach

By Will Brown • DEMOCRAT STAFF WRITER • April 8, 2010

Corey Fuller was introduced as the new head football coach at East Gadsden High School Wednesday afternoon.

Joined by nearly a dozen players, all of whom wore ties, the former Florida State defensive back outlined his goals as he assumes his first head coaching position at the varsity level. Specifically, the 10-year NFL veteran said he wants to win a district title, changing the culture of the program that went 4-6 last year and teaching football to his players.

“We have great talent among our students and Corey Fuller has great football experience,” said East Gadsden athletic director Andy Gay in a statement. “Together, that talent and experience should produce a successful football program and something the entire community can be proud of.”

After retiring from professional football, Fullers, a Rickards graduate, has been an assistant at his alma mater and West Gadsden for the past three seasons. It’s the connections that Fuller made within the Gadsden community that made his current position attractive to him.

“What I did is in the past,” Fuller said. “What I did in high school and at Florida State is in the past. I have to earn these kids’ respect. How I treat them. How I handle them and how I deal with them in certain situations.”

Fuller’s playing days at FSU may be behind him, but he looks forward to bringing a “Florida State mentality” to the Midway school. That means the Jaguars will look to run a multiple-set pro-style offense and of course employ what Fuller called a “tough defense.”
