Godby’s Johnson steals show at jamboree
Cougars win both halves while Lincoln posts win over Chiles
By Aimee Sachs • DEMOCRAT STAFF WRITER • August 28, 2009
At Thursday night’s jamboree at Gene Cox Stadium, the senior got exactly what he wanted.
In the Cougars’ two halves against Chiles and Lincoln, Johnson racked up at least 155 yards – that’s just the combined yardage of his five touchdowns.

Lovorrie Johnson
The night started with Lincoln’s 14-0 half against Chiles. After a scoreless first quarter, the Trojans got on the board when senior quarterback Ryan White hooked up with Marcus Wilson for a 50-yard touchdown. The second score came with 2:10 left in regulation on a 52-yard Buck Allen run.
And then Act I of the Lavorrie Johnson Show began with the Cougars’ 34-13 win over the Timberwolves. Johnson broke through with a 57-yard touchdown run 80 seconds into the first quarter. Seven and a half minutes later Johnson put Godby up 14-0 with a 10-yard dash into the end zone.
One minute into the second quarter, Johnson struck yet again with a 22-yard touchdown to put the Cougars up 21-0.
From that point, the Chiles offense began to show signs of life. Jaron Williams put the Timberwolves on the board for the first time at the 9:29 mark in the second quarter on a one-yard run on fourth and goal.
Two minutes later, Godby quarterback Markis Davis connected with Michael Ethridge on a 10-yard touchdown pass for a 27-7 lead. Less than a minute later, sophomore defensive back T.J. Davis scored for Godby on a 22-yard interception return to make it 34-7.
Chiles didn’t give up and made the score 34-14 after sophomore quarterback Tres Penny found Mychal Poole for a 35-yard touchdown.
For the final act, the Trojans emerged back on the field to take on the Cougars. Lincoln struck first on a Carlos Gaston field goal at the 5:55 mark of the first quarter. Godby answered four minutes later on another Johnson rush to make it 7-3. The Trojans regained the lead with 30 seconds left in the first quarter on a 34-yard touchdown from White to Mike Reynolds to make it 10-7. But Johnson scored the go-ahead points when he reeled in a 55-yard pass from sophomore quarterback Dennis Andrews, giving Godby a 14-10 lead that remained for the rest of regulation.
“We did some good things, we did some bad things,” Godby coach Shelton Crews said. “Typical jamboree.”

CHILES FOOTBALL HOPES FOR TURNAROUND YEAR

Chiles defense
By Will Brown • DEMOCRAT STAFF WRITER • August 27, 2009
Chiles linebacker D.J. Price has one of those handshakes that makes you question whether your hand is arthritic. Should he and his defensive cohorts apply that much pressure to offenses this season the Timberwolves may see improvement from a winless 2008.
But, before totaling the victories, Chiles must get through tonight’s jamboree against Lincoln and Godby. First-year head coach Barney Myers is less concerned with the outcome than the type of effort he sees from a team that returns only four starters on both sides of the ball.
“The score is not important (tonight). It’s how hard we play,” Myers said following practice earlier this week. “If we do that, everything else will take care of itself.”
Price agreed with his coach’s frank assessment about the importance of tonight’s jamboree. He chuckled when he said he’s ready to see the results of an offseason of work by hitting someone else besides teammates for a change.
“How hard we play (tonight) is going to make a big decision on how well our season goes,” said Price, the senior middle linebacker who will likely captain the defense this fall.
Price and junior quarterback Bert Givens said they have repeatedly been queried by fellow classmates whether the Timberwolves will win a game this year. Both were confident their team will register some wins this fall.
“I’m expecting (wins) because I think we’re going to shock a lot of people, said Givens. “We’re bigger faster and stronger than last year and have worked our butts off since January.”
On both sides of the football, Myers hopes to see some progress from the spring jamboree. Specifically for an offense that averaged 6.2 points per game last year Myers is looking for fewer penalties and blown assignments.
Chiles High 2009 Team Preview
Lawton Chiles High School Mascot: Timberwolves
Class 4A-District 3
2008 Record: 0-10
District record: 0-4
Head Coach: Barney Myers
Team 2009 Outlook: Last season the Timberwolves went 0-10, We don’t think new head coach Burney Myers will allow this group to repeat that. With weapons like Jaron Williams and Transfer (Pompano Beach Ely) WR Andre Gayle on offense, junior QB Bert Givens will be more than able to move the ball. Standout defender D.J. Price will force offensive coordinators to account for him all night long.

LB D.J. Price
Strengths: Line backers and defensive line
Weakness: Learning a new offensive system
Players to Watch: LB D.J. Price, CB Nathan Snow, WR Andre Gayle, DT T.J. Marten, S Will Finley, LB/S Reggie Mitchell, QB Bert Givens, RB Jaron Williams
Schedule: http://updates.4quartersonline.com/?p=59
Prediction: 3-7

NFC QB Clint Trickett was his usual self; leading the Eagles to a 4-1 record even though his team lost to Miami Springs in the Semi final game. The Eagles are looking to be very explosive on the offensive side of the ball.
Bulldog defenders making a play
The Godby Cougars are fast and athletic; loaded at the skill position. They posted a 3-2 record for the day.Tight end Michael Ethridge looks to be a handful . His size and speed made him a tough match-up for defenders.
The Baby Rattlers were without starting Quarterback Mike Melvin, but sophomore Javaris Jones was more than adequate. Wide receiver Leonard Barrington made some great catches over quality competition.
Maclay Head coach Kez McCorvey should be happy with his team’s performance. They gave Chiles more than they could handle. The young team did more than hold their own against some larger schools.
Chiles is still in the growing process with a new head coach, Barney Myers. They had a rough time but had some standout players like junior RB and DB, Juron Williams and senior LB and DJ Price. Both had a pretty good day.
Taylor County’s QB Ty Crowley looks better every time we see him. He lead Taylor County to within one point of making it to Semi finals. Wide out Reggie King is a smooth athlete that gives Crowley a big target. He gave defenders fits all day.
