NFC, FAMU High kick off spring football scrimmages

There are only 113 days until the 2010 prep football season commences. For the impatient types, today’s spring games featuring North Florida Christian and FAMU High, the first featuring Big Bend teams, will have to suffice. Kickoff in the NFC game is at 7 p.m. EST, while the orange and green will put toe to pigskin a half hour later.
Robert Craft will lead the Eagles onto the field for the first time this evening as they head to Chipley. The first-year coach has already dealt with adversity as starting quarterback Matt Dobson and top returning rusher Warren Hart, both rising juniors, missed spring practice due to shoulder surgeries.
Both will be healthy in time for summer conditioning and the fall. In their place will be Josh Adkins and Michael Railey. There will not be wholesale changes to NFC’s offense, as it will employ a pro-style offense similar to the one run under former coach Tim Cokely.
“On top of us losing a lot of seniors and the injuries, we do have some guys playing positions they have never played before or a lot of young guys,” Craft said about a team that will replace Florida State signee Clint Trickett and 14 others from a 7-2 team in 2009. “That’s where we will rely on our seniors. As coaches, what we’re interested in is the execution because we have a lot of guys out and the fresh faces.”
The only injuries FAMU High suffered heading into the spring was bruised pride after the Rattlers did not conquer their district for the first time in years. FAMU High will head down to Eastpoint to take on a Franklin County team that FAMU High coach Ira Reynolds believes has the talent and togetherness to surprise some people in District 2-1A.
Reynolds said his team practiced well this month and developed some depth at linebacker, a position he felt was the weak link of the defense a year ago. Delmus Harrison will return in the backfield and he will be joined by rising senior Derrick Austin.
“Last year was a turbulent season for us,” Reynolds said. “We lost for the first time the district championship so that was tough. Just to get them back out there, the guys are excited again. It’s a great feeling.”
Many fans would agree as the footballs once again fly.
