Leon Wins District
With 10 seconds left in Tuesday’s district final against rival Chiles High School, Leon QB #2 Anna DeVlieger launched a sailing pass, carrying the hopes of a district championship, into the end-zone where a leaping T’sa Graham made the game winning grab for the Lady Lions. Clutching the ball tightly to her chest, it was fitting that Graham would seal the district title for Leon. After suffering a concussion that sidelined her for two games, T’sa came up with the biggest play of the tournament just when her teammates needed her the most. The thrilling 19-13 victory advances Leon into the state playoffs.
In the second quarter of play, Lady Lion WR #11 Stuart Drew got her team on the board first, with a touchdown reception allowing Leon to take an early lead. On the other side of the ball, an interception by Lady Timberwolves CB #3 Montana Meleney gave her team a big scoring opportunity, but Chiles ended the half scoreless.
In the middle of the third quarter Chiles found the end-zone and the lead with a score from WR #20 AJ Hamilton followed by the extra point that was made by WR #24 Kianna Woolington. At the end of the third quarter the Lady Timberwolves were on top, 7-6.
Lady Lion C #34 Holly De Vlieger put Leon back in front early in the 4th quarter with a touchdown but the extra point failed. If there wasn’t enough drama already, a score by Chiles WR #24 Kianna Woolington was called back by the referees with 44 seconds remaining in regulation. On the very next play the Lady Timberwolves scored again, with this one counting, putting the score at a “nail-biting”13-12. This set the stage for the Leon’s exciting come-from-behind win.
“Another Leon-Chiles round.” said Leon Coach Matt Williams after the game. “I mean those games are always like that… they always come down to the end. I credit my coaches for doing a great job this year.”
Chiles Coach Stan Goldstein also stated, “It was about what everyone expected – two really good teams going at it.” When asked about the season and his team, Goldstein also went on to say, “Our girls made a commitment to be successful from day one.”
The Lady Lions will head to the regional semifinals in Jacksonville, Saturday, April 30th.

4Q GAMENIGHT Game of the Week: FAMU High vs East Gadsden
After an exciting first half the FAMU High Baby Rattlers have upset the East Gadsden Jaguars 26 – 20. The Baby Rattlers used an effective rushing attack led by RB #7 D. Harrison along with a big interception by the Baby Rattler defense in the 2nd quarter, that set up the go ahead score. After many failed attempts, East Gadsden tried to stifle the FAMU High running game in the second half, but the Jaguar offense was unable to gain any rhythm.
East Gadsden managed to make things interesting late in the 4th quarter. After a clock eating FAMU High scoring drive, The Jaguars drove nearly the length of the field in a matter of seconds to come within a touchdown. The ensuing onside kick was recovered by FAMU high and ended East Gadsden’s hopes of a late rally.
