Young War Eagle Team Makes Bold Statement

4Quartersonline.com Staff – May 28, 2010

The Spring Jamborees are usually no more than glorified scrimmages, but last night at Gene Cox Field the first night of the 2010 Spring Jamboree had more of a regular season game feel. The first half pitted newly appointed Godby Head Coach Ronnie Cottrell against what might be the surprise team in the area, the Wakulla War Eagles. Wakulla running back Marshane Godbolt got the night started with a 9 yard touchdown scamper with 1:49 left in the 1st quarter.

The Cougars didn’t take long to respond with a score of their own. With 36 seconds left in the 1st, quarterback Dennis Andrews connected with his favorite target, wide receiver Bakari Harris on a 45 yard touchdown pass tying the score, 7-7.  The two teams traded touchdowns, with a 2 point conversion by the War Eagles being the difference. The Cougars had a last second chance to pull out the victory, but missed a 28 yard field goal attempt with only 10 seconds left on the clock. The final score of the half was Wakulla 22, Godby 21.

The next matchup featured Wakulla against the Leon Lions, who after a quick start, fell to a stout War Eagle defense. Leon quarterback Raliegh DeVore got things going when he rolled left and hit wide receiver Kenny Gosha in stride for a 32 yard touchdown with 9:20 left in the 1st quarter. After their first strike, things quickly changed for the Lions when War Eagle Linebacker Tamarick Holmes scooped an errant pitch by DeVore and returned it for a 82 yard touchdown. Wakulla added another late touchdown to seal the win over Leon, 12 – 7.

The Cougars and Lions faced off in the final half of Thursday night’s jamboree. Special Teams’ plays marked this game with Leon giving up two block punts that lead to 2 quick Godby scores.

The Cougars quickly jumped out to a 26 – 7 lead over Leon, with the scoring capped off on a 38 yard punt return by Godby’s Jalen Richardson to give the Cougars a 26 point lead. The single bright spot for the Lions in the final half of play was Justin Dixon’s exciting 95 yard kickoff return for Leon’s only touchdown. The final score, Godby 33, Leon 7.

CONFIRMED: Godby Cougars Hire New Head Football Coach, Ronnie Cottrell

Ronnie Cottrell

Ronnie Cottrell

The stories that have been circulating the Godby football program have been confirmed. Former Florida State recruiting guru, Ronnie Cottrell, will be the Cougars new head football coach. Godby Athletic Director Reggie Davis commented on the announcement by Principal Jean Ferguson. “There were about 96 applicants and we narrowed it down to about 3,” said Davis “Mike McClinton (current defensive coordinator), John Hunt (former assistant coach at South Carolina and Florida) and Ronnie Cottrell. We would have been good with either of those 3 choices, but principal Ferguson said that he (Cottrell) was her choice.”

Cottrell, held the positions of Recruiting Coordinator at both FSU and Alabama where he was described by Tomahawk Nation as “The Architect of the FSU Dynasty”. Last season Cottrell was “unexpectedly released” from his head coaching job at Alma Bryant High School in Irvington Alabama according to WKRG – Mobile, AL, after only his 2nd season. After a decade of success under former head coach Shelton Crews that saw 6 District, 2 Regional and 1 State Runner-up titles, Godby will look to improve upon the programs success.

That road to success for the Cougars should begin as early as next week, when Cottrell is expected to arrive on campus to meet administrators, coaches and players. Reggie Davis also stated, “We feel good about what we talked about in our interview. We want to be able to continue to move forward and build on what we already have.”

Godby’s Lee expects to keep winning at FIU

By Will Brown • Democrat Staff Writer • January 26, 2010

Jericho Lee is used to winning. It was that way in the three years he played at Godby High School, and he firmly expects the wins to keep coming once he arrives at Florida International in the fall.

The towering defensive tackle committed to play at Florida International earlier this month largely because he wanted to be a part of history.

In eight years of football the Golden Panthers have never had a winning season, but that has not deterred Lee from believing that trend will change.

“I have a chance to be a part of history,” Lee said. “Before (Florida State) and Florida were FSU and Florida they had to start somewhere. When you have not been out there as long, you want to build that reputation and that winning name. I feel I can be a part of that and enhance that as much as possible.”

Florida International was the first to offer a scholarship and the first place Lee visited. After taking a trip to Montgomery to check out what Alabama State had to offer, he committed to play for the Golden Panthers.

Despite playing football for the first time once he arrived in high school, Lee received offers from Northern Illinois, Alabama State, Southern Mississippi, Tulane and Tulsa.

Tallahassee represented in FACA all-star game

Will Brown • Prep Notebook • December 18, 2009

Earlier this week our section planned to run a few words about Jefferson County’s David Crumity being one of the local

Leon Head Coach Bill Ragans

Leon Head Coach Bill Ragans

athletes who will play in the Florida Athletic Coaches Association North-South Football All-Star Classic. It sounded like a good plan until we realized that Crumity was just one of six local athletes that will play in the Dec. 22 game down in Sebring. North Florida Christian’s Clint Trickett will be a quarterback on this team. He will be accompanied by Leon’s Brandon Graham, Godby’s Chris St. Hilaire, Rickards’ Brandon Denmark and Florida High’s Chase Varnadore.

Leon coach Bill Ragans has coached against all those athletes with the exception of Crumity. Ragans will be among the five assistants on the North team that includes some of the best athletes from Melbourne to Pensacola. “There are a couple kids like Trickett and Jericho Lee and Chris St. Hilaire — I would be glad to have those kids on my team for a change instead of blocking them or keeping them from getting open.”

Godby’s Crews steps down

By Aimee Sachs • DEMOCRAT STAFF WRITER • December 16, 2009

After 11 years as head coach of the Godby High football team, Shelton Crews is moving on.Crews will be the next executive director of the Florida Athletic Coaches Association, effective July 1.

“I’ll be coaching coaches,” Crews said of his new gig. “It’s a chance for me to represent a profession that’s just an unbelievable thing to be a part of.”

FACA formed a selection committee over the summer with the announcement of longtime FACA executive director W.L. “Wink” Barnette’s impending retirement.

By the end of November, Crews was one of four finalists for the job. He interviewed for the position on Saturday and was offered the job on the spot.

An active member of the FACA for several years, Crews became state football chairman three years ago.

Crews posted an 88-42 record in his 11 seasons as head coach of the Cougars and a 110-61 record in 15 years overall.

He broke the news to his players on Monday.

“It was tough,” Crews said. “You get attached to them and you try to treat each one of them like they’re your own.”

Godby athletic director Reggie Davis said the search has yet to begin for Crews’ successor. He knows it won’t be easy to replace “an advocate for football in every aspect.”

“He’s built a program — not just having some good teams every now and then,” Davis said. “He’s developed an outstanding program.”

4Q PLAYOFF CENTRAL: Both Lincoln and Godby Fall in 3rd Round Playoff Matchups

Round 3 of the Florida state playoffs featured the only two local-area teams remaining. Both Lincoln and Godby faced top ranked undefeated teams with high powered offenses loaded with plenty of stud athletes.

For the Lincoln Trojans the challenge of advancing to the next round against an undefeated Niceville proved to be too much as the Trojans fell to the Eagles, 45 – 31. Lead by senior QB #11 R. White, Lincoln proved early that their pass-offense would be a threat to the Eagles. In a display of offensive fire-power, both Lincoln and Niceville traded scores and lead changes several times during the course of the game. Only in the final few minutes was the ball-game decided as Niceville’s highly touted RB #24 R. Finch scored the final touchdown that put the Trojans away.

Meanwhile, on the Space Coast, Godby was giving undefeated the Cocoa Tigers all that they could handle. The Cougars looked poised to pull off the upset, as they seemingly took control of the ball-game on two costly Cocoa fumbles and stiffled the Tiger rushing attack for nearly the entire game. The entire 3rd quarter and nearly the first 8 minutes of the 4th quarter belonged soley to Godby and their defense lead by senior DT #99 J. Lee. However, one simple screen pass changed everything as Tiger RB #4 C. Bouie raced 91 yards to set up the go ahead touchdown for the Tigers. In an almost cruel twist of fate, Godby again had their season ended by a single point, as they were edged by Cocoa, 17 – 16 on the final touchdowns extra point attempt.

4Q GAMENIGHT: Playoff Central – 2nd Round Matchups and area Scores

It’s round 2 in the state playoffs! Godby and Lincoln have prevailed in their 2nd round games with wins, while Jefferson County  and Florida High weren’t so lucky. The Lincoln Trojans capitalized early on Columbia turnovers, to outlast the Tigers, 20-14, and advance to the Class 4A regional championship. Godby’s 4 fumble recoveries against the Baker County Wildcats sealed the 26-19 win and captured the Class 2A region 1 title.

The Tigers were bested by a pesky Hawthorne offense who managed to out score Jefferson County, 38 -28. Florida High, meanwhile, was dominated by Pensacola Catholic, who held the Seminoles to just 7 points in a 44-7 loss in Pensacola.

Lincoln outlasts Godby, 24 – 17, wins battle for city bragging rights

What is quickly becoming a classic match-up of two city powers, the Lincoln Trojans edged Godby Cougars, 24 – 17, and added to the heated rivalry in the season finale. Tonight’s game featured the same story-lines as many other meetings between the two schools; both teams are district champions; both schools feature a host of college prospects; and both battled once again for the right to call themselves city champions.

4Q GAMENIGHT: Godby hangs on late to claim district championship, win over Rickards, 21 – 20 in a thriller!

4Quartersonline.com was at Gene Cox Stadium for yet another district match-up between Rickards and Godby. In what appeared to be a sure Godby win, quickly turned into a dramatic thriller! The Raiders came into the ball-game with their playoff hopes on the line, while Godby looked to capture the district crown. Early in the game the Cougars jumped out to a 14 – 0 lead. The Raiders, however, just wouldn’t quit. Late in the 4th quarter, The Rickards offense found its way into the end-zone and cut the Godby lead to 7.

And then things got real… With 3:00 min remaining in the 4th quarter the Cougars put together what seemed to be a game ending drive, winding the clock down to just 1 minute. In 60 seconds the Raiders drove the length of the field to set up the go-ahead touchdown, with no time left on the clock! What was an unexciting 2nd half,  was now nail-biting, dramatic thriller. Still trailing Godby, 21 – 20, with the extra point attempt to be made, Raider head coach Rudy Hubbard, decided to go for the win by going for 2-point conversion. With it came the hopes of an extended season by sending the district standings in to a 3 way tie, forcing a Monday night tie-breaking match-up. But just as easily as the Raider offense had marched down-field on the final drive, their pass attempt on the 2-point try was broken up by the Cougar defense. A game that was filled with emotion, lived up to every bit of the build-up and hype that surrounded it… down to the very last second.

4Q GAMENIGHT: Godby outlasts Madison County, holds on to win 21 – 14

In one of the areas biggest games, the Godby Cougars stunned the Madison County Cowboys in a battle for district supremacy, 21 – 7. Cougar RB #26 L. Johnson gashed the Cowboy defense, while QB #10 D. Andrews hooked up with WR #8 C. St. Hilaire on a 78 yard pass, to give a Godby a quick and surprising 14 – 0 lead. After being shut out in the 1st half, Madison County’s woes continued through the 3rd quarter as the Cowboys were plagued with penalties.

However, there was still some bite left in the “Cur-Dog”, as Madison County finally found the end-zone midway through the 4th quarter when Cowboy RB #20 M. McDaniels scored from 4 yards out to make the score 21 – 7. And then, things got real… On the ensuing kick-off, the Cowboys recovered an on-side kick and managed to score again as Madison QB #8 K. Singletary completed a 45 yard touchdown pass,  to pull his team within 7 . Both Cowboy touchdowns came within a 90 second span. What started as a dominating, winning effort for Godby, quickly turned into a nail-biting, near comback for Madison County.
