Jefferson County Falls To Madison County in Spring Game

Fan’s at Monticello’s “Death Valley” stadium were treated to one exciting night of football on Friday night. The hometown Jefferson County Tigers went toe-to-toe for three quarters with one of the states top programs, the Madison County Cowboys. Jefferson County running-back and 4Quartersonline.com 2009 player of the year, DeVondrick Nealy was more than up to the task as he ran over and around Madison’s defenders, rushing for over 150 yards, scoring two touchdowns and added a 2 point conversion.

Nealy got things started early getting the Tigers off to an early lead taking a hand-off to the left and scoring from the Cowboy 9 yard line. However, the Tigers lead didn’t last long. On the ensuing kickoff Madison County’s return man, Demarcus Norton, went 82 yards to tie the game, 6-6, with 7:09 in the 1st.

The young Jefferson County squad was not phased after a turnover. With a strong defensive stop, they took the the lead once again on a 79 yard drive ending with Kenny Madison’s 1 yard touchdown run and 2 point conversion. At the end of the 1st quarter, to everyone ‘s surprise the underdog Tigers were on top the heavily favored Cowboys. With a rock-hard defensive effort and an explosive offensive display, Jefferson County took and early 14-7 lead.

Madison County showed signs of life in the 2nd quarter, out scoring Jefferson 13-0 . Rising senior quarterback, Kevin Singletary was responsible for all of the Madison County scores in the second quarter. His efforts were complimented by a hard-hitting defense lead by linebacker Lepadre Stevenson.

Jefferson County refused to go away quietly though, as the Tigers capitalized on a bobbled kick-off return by the Cowboys. With excellent field position from the turnover, the Tigers went to work on the 40 yard line. Two plays later, Nealy sprinted 40 yards to pay-dirt, giving Jefferson County the lead 22-20. That score must have woke up the ole Madison County “Cur-Dog”, as the Cowboys dominated the remainder of the ball-game scoring 27 unanswered points.  With a stifling defense, Madison County outlasted the persistent Tigers, 47 – 22.

Jefferson County stays in-house for new coach

By Will Brown • Democrat Staff Writer • February 25, 2010

Tiger Head Football Coach Jeremy Brown

Change has once again befallen the Jefferson County football program. However, for the first time in years, that change has come from within to ensure continuity in a football program that rose to claim a district championship in 2009.

Head football coach Willie Spears resigned his position at Jefferson County Feb. 19 to take the same position at Live Oak Suwannee. Wednesday, in front of the entire football team former offensive coordinator Jeremy Brown was elevated to replace Spears. “It’s the most difficult professional decision I have had to make by far,” Spears said. “We’ve moved a lot. It was very, very difficult up until the last moment because it affected so many people.”

The Tigers were 6-6 last season after going 1-9 in 2008. Spears, the 2009 All-Big Bend coach of the year, spent one season coaching at the rural 1B school leading the Tigers to an appearance in the regional finals.

Brown was an assistant on a Venice team that went undefeated and ran through Palm Beach Dwyer 77-14 for a state championship in 2000. He was also an assistant at Sarasota Booker for two seasons, before moving to Monticello to coach with Spears in 2009.

“You never know what God’s plan is,” Brown said. “You think you have it figured out. You tell yourself ‘You want to be a head coach in the next couple years,’ Then, I get a call that Coach Spears has resigned.”

4Q BREAKING NEWS: Jefferson Co. Coach Willie Spears headed to Live Oak Suwannee!

signingdayjefThe Jefferson County Tigers find themselves in search of a new head football coach and athletic director as head man Willie Spears will be taking over the program at Suwannee High School. Spears, the 4Quartersonline.com 2009 Head Coach of the Year, is noted for breathing life into a Jefferson County program that hadn’t made the playoffs since 2004 in just a single season. The Tigers won the Class 1B District 1 title and saw a record 5 seniors sign letters to play college football under his leadership as a coach and as a Teacher in the school.

2009 will be remembered as a year where many local-area teams had winning records and 9 of those teams reached postseason play. Spears’ Tigers were among that group. When asked about the move to Suwanee, Spears said that “Bill Brumfield and the Jefferson County community treated me like a king. I did not want to leave, however it was the best move for my family at this time.” Stay logged on to 4Quartersonline.com as we bring you more on this story.

Jefferson County’s Crumity headed to South Alabama

By Aimee Sachs • DEMOCRAT STAFF WRITER • January 27, 2010

Jefferson County receiver and cornerback David Crumity’s bright future is about to give the University of South Alabama’s young football program a major boost.

Crumity was courted by a handful of powerhouse Southeast Conference schools, but it was the courtship of Jaguars coach Joey Jones and his staff — and the opportunity to compete for a starting role on defense — that sold Crumity.

“I met players,” Crumity said. “I met their whole coaching staff.”

In fact, before Crumity’s official visit last weekend, six South Alabama coaches paid Crumity a visit.

“That says a lot about their program,” Jefferson County coach Willie Spears said.

It’s a program that is still very much in its infancy. South Alabama is currently not classified after just one seven-game season. South Alabama will begin its Division I transition in 2011.

Tallahassee represented in FACA all-star game

Will Brown • Prep Notebook • December 18, 2009

Earlier this week our section planned to run a few words about Jefferson County’s David Crumity being one of the local

Leon Head Coach Bill Ragans

athletes who will play in the Florida Athletic Coaches Association North-South Football All-Star Classic. It sounded like a good plan until we realized that Crumity was just one of six local athletes that will play in the Dec. 22 game down in Sebring. North Florida Christian’s Clint Trickett will be a quarterback on this team. He will be accompanied by Leon’s Brandon Graham, Godby’s Chris St. Hilaire, Rickards’ Brandon Denmark and Florida High’s Chase Varnadore.

Leon coach Bill Ragans has coached against all those athletes with the exception of Crumity. Ragans will be among the five assistants on the North team that includes some of the best athletes from Melbourne to Pensacola. “There are a couple kids like Trickett and Jericho Lee and Chris St. Hilaire — I would be glad to have those kids on my team for a change instead of blocking them or keeping them from getting open.”

It’s round 2 in the state playoffs! Godby and Lincoln have prevailed in their 2nd round games with wins, while Jefferson County  and Florida High weren’t so lucky. Godby’s 4 fumble recoveries against the Baker County Wildcats sealed the 26-19 win and captured the Class 2A region 1 title.

Florida High, meanwhile, was dominated by Pensacola Catholic, who held the Seminoles to just 7 points in a 44-7 loss in Pensacola.

4Quartersonline Preseason Ranking 14-11

11

11

11.  East Gadsden  (Jaguars) 50pts ;  When you get to the middle of the rankings most of the teams are interchangeable. The Jaguars received votes as high as 7th and as low as 12th. No voter had them in the same place. Last season the Jaguars barely missed the playoffs, losing in the play-in game against Rickards. This team could very well be a top 10 team by the end of the season. With RB Montez   Fryson  and  NG Kelvin Ray leading the Jaguars they could pull a few upsets.

12

12

12.  Chiles (Timberwolves) 48pts; Last season the Timberwolves   went 0-10, I don’t think new head coach Burney Myers will allow this group to repeat that. With weapons like Jaron Williams and Transfer (Pompano Beach Ely) WR   Andre Gayle on offense junior QB Bert Givens will be more than able to move the ball. Standout defender D.J. Price will force Offensive   Coordinators   to account for him all night long.

13

13

13.  Taylor County (Bulldogs) 42pts;With a record of  3-7 last season, the Bulldogs look to improve with Quarterback  Ty Crowley at the helm. District competition is stiff and will be a big challenge. WR Reggie King and  RB Tony Jackson are the headliners for the Bulldogs and coach Boggs will depend heavily on them to lead his team.

14

14

14.  Jefferson County (Tigers) 30pts;New coaching staff, enthusiastic team coupled with athletic players should make for a fun season for the Tigers. RB  DeVondrick   Nealy along with DB David  Cromity  and FAMU High Transfer DB Marquise Dobson will give opponents a lot to deal with. I don’t look for them to stay at 14.

Former Jefferson County star makes good

By Jim Lamar • DEMOCRAT Sports editor • July 31, 2009

Ervin Lewis

Ervin Lewis

Knee injuries – really, knee surgeries – forced Ervin Lewis to walk away from football in 1996. But he never walked away from athletics. And now the former Jefferson County High star is one step closer to making his dream a reality.

Lewis, 35, was named an associate athletics director in charge of facilities and operations at the University of North Florida earlier this week. He spent the last two years as the director of football operations at UAB.

“This is an awesome opportunity for me,” Lewis said. “It’s another step toward reaching my personal dreams. I had a chance to work with (UNF athletics director) Lee Moon when he was an associate athletics director at UAB. I think it kind of fits in with the old philosophy that if you do good by people and work hard that it will always pay off.”

The job assignment at the Jacksonville school isn’t exactly what Lewis thought he would be doing after he graduated from Jefferson County in 1992. After helping the Tigers win a state title as a senior, Lewis was named the Tallahassee Democrat’s Big Bend Defensive Player of the Year.

“I was thinking NFL,” Lewis said.

He signed a scholarship with Georgia Tech and then-coach Bobby Ross, but said he decided against enrolling when Ross changed jobs after national signing day. After spending a year in a Mississippi junior college, Lewis signed with Auburn with the hopes of making a major splash as a defensive lineman.

But a sixth knee surgery officially ended his football dreams in January, 1996 when he still had two years of eligibility remaining.

“I never had a chance to play one down at Auburn,” Lewis said. “And that was tough to handle. But, you know, I left there with two degrees. I made the most of what a student-athlete is given a chance to do.”

Tallahassee Area 2009 District Predictions 1B

4Quartersonline Staff

Class: 1B – DISTRICT: 1

1. FAMU

2. Graceville

3. Jefferson County

4. Cottondale

5. Rocky Bayou Christian (Niceville)

6. John Paul II ( Tallahassee )

This district has been dominated by one team, the Baby Rattlers, and 2009 shouldn’t be any  different . FAMU High has not lost a district game since joining 1B.  The addition of Jefferson County should make second place interesting but the Graceville Tigers should hold on to a second place finish..

DISTRICT: 2

1. Lafayette (Mayo)

2. Arlington Country Day ( Jacksonville )

3. Aucilla Christian ( Monticello )

4. Hawthorne

5. Oak Hall ( Gainesville )

6. St. Francis ( Gainesville )

7. Mandarin Christian ( Jacksonville )

8. St. Johns ( Orange Park )

9. Cedar Creek Christian ( Jacksonville)

District 2 is the largest in division 1B but with Mayo dropping from 1A they are definitely the team to beat. We predict them to win without a loss. Arlington Country Day should easily take second place .  Aucilla Christian should vastly improve but Mayo and ACD should be to much for them to handle.
