Young War Eagle Team Makes Bold Statement

4Quartersonline.com Staff – May 28, 2010

The Spring Jamborees are usually no more than glorified scrimmages, but last night at Gene Cox Field the first night of the 2010 Spring Jamboree had more of a regular season game feel. The first half pitted newly appointed Godby Head Coach Ronnie Cottrell against what might be the surprise team in the area, the Wakulla War Eagles. Wakulla running back Marshane Godbolt got the night started with a 9 yard touchdown scamper with 1:49 left in the 1st quarter.

The Cougars didn’t take long to respond with a score of their own. With 36 seconds left in the 1st, quarterback Dennis Andrews connected with his favorite target, wide receiver Bakari Harris on a 45 yard touchdown pass tying the score, 7-7.  The two teams traded touchdowns, with a 2 point conversion by the War Eagles being the difference. The Cougars had a last second chance to pull out the victory, but missed a 28 yard field goal attempt with only 10 seconds left on the clock. The final score of the half was Wakulla 22, Godby 21.

The next matchup featured Wakulla against the Leon Lions, who after a quick start, fell to a stout War Eagle defense. Leon quarterback Raliegh DeVore got things going when he rolled left and hit wide receiver Kenny Gosha in stride for a 32 yard touchdown with 9:20 left in the 1st quarter. After their first strike, things quickly changed for the Lions when War Eagle Linebacker Tamarick Holmes scooped an errant pitch by DeVore and returned it for a 82 yard touchdown. Wakulla added another late touchdown to seal the win over Leon, 12 – 7.

The Cougars and Lions faced off in the final half of Thursday night’s jamboree. Special Teams’ plays marked this game with Leon giving up two block punts that lead to 2 quick Godby scores.

The Cougars quickly jumped out to a 26 – 7 lead over Leon, with the scoring capped off on a 38 yard punt return by Godby’s Jalen Richardson to give the Cougars a 26 point lead. The single bright spot for the Lions in the final half of play was Justin Dixon’s exciting 95 yard kickoff return for Leon’s only touchdown. The final score, Godby 33, Leon 7.

Leon graduate Green commits to Minnesota

By Will Brown • Democrat Staff Writer • December 19, 2009

Not many professional athletes relish waking up before dawn for film study and skills drills. However, that was James Green’s ritual each morning with his uncle and former FSU linebacker Lamont Green. A fall of early-morning workouts paid off for former Leon wide receiver James Green this week when he committed to play football at the University of Minnesota.

“Ever since I was little, everyone told me I was going to be a good football player,” said Green, who is the third person in his family to earn a college football scholarship. “My uncle told me it was not going to be a cakewalk and that you would have to work hard and you have to study. Every morning, we would get up at 5:30 and run and run routes and catch balls.”

Green will enroll in January to pursue a degree in criminal justice.

Tallahassee represented in FACA all-star game

Will Brown • Prep Notebook • December 18, 2009

Earlier this week our section planned to run a few words about Jefferson County’s David Crumity being one of the local

Leon Head Coach Bill Ragans

Leon Head Coach Bill Ragans

athletes who will play in the Florida Athletic Coaches Association North-South Football All-Star Classic. It sounded like a good plan until we realized that Crumity was just one of six local athletes that will play in the Dec. 22 game down in Sebring. North Florida Christian’s Clint Trickett will be a quarterback on this team. He will be accompanied by Leon’s Brandon Graham, Godby’s Chris St. Hilaire, Rickards’ Brandon Denmark and Florida High’s Chase Varnadore.

Leon coach Bill Ragans has coached against all those athletes with the exception of Crumity. Ragans will be among the five assistants on the North team that includes some of the best athletes from Melbourne to Pensacola. “There are a couple kids like Trickett and Jericho Lee and Chris St. Hilaire — I would be glad to have those kids on my team for a change instead of blocking them or keeping them from getting open.”

Leon defeats Mosley 24-21 in Overtime

October 01, 2009 9:32 PM

PANAMA CITY — Mosley and Leon are two young football teams for Class 4A schools that could be a lot of fun in the coming years.

That said, they’ll have to go a long way to duplicate the resilience and drama provided by the Lions’ 24-21 overtime victory over the Dolphins Thursday night at Tommy Oliver Stadium.

Fittingly, it was a sophomore who produced the winning points, Sean Allen, after Leon junior Dre Brown had come up with his second interception of the game to thwart Mosley’s overtime possession.

Lions coach Bill Ragans didn’t hesitate to trot out Allen on first down.kqv8ga-mosleonfb2

“He’s a calm and cool little rascal who’s done the job for us this season,” Ragans said. “It seems like I say it every week, but our kids fought and fought.”

Leon moved to 3-1, while dropping Mosley to the same record on the Dolphins’ Homecoming.

FINAL: MADISON CO. 28 – LEON 14

The Leon Lions fell to a very persistent Madison County Cowboy squad here at Leon’s Bobby Benson Field on Friday night.  After jumping out to an early lead, Leon showed signs of upsetting Madison. The Lions were able to contain the potent Cowboy running game early in the 1st half.

Leon lineman Mack Helms commits to East Carolina

By Aimee Sachs • DEMOCRAT STAFF WRITER • September 8, 2009

·

Leon offensive and defensive lineman Mack Helms has committed to East Carolina University.

The 6-foot-3, 275-pound two-year letterman started on the Lions defensive line as a

Mack Helms

junior in 2008. This year he is starting on both the offensive and defensive lines.

Helms chose East Carolina over Marshall, South Florida, Cincinnati, Southern Mississippi, Indiana and Iowa State. “He is a hard working kid that goes 100 mph every step,” Leon coach Bill Ragans said of Helms. “A big team player.”Ragans knows East Carolina head coach Skip Holtz, who was a graduate assistant at Florida State when Ragans played for the Seminoles in the late-1980s. I think the world of Skip,” Ragans said. “He runs a first-class operation and it’s a great decision for (Helms).”
