Lincoln safety Garye commits to USF
By Jim Lamar • DEMOCRAT SPORTS EDITOR • June 16, 2010
One trip to the USF campus in April convinced Chris Garye Jr. that he had found the perfect place to play college football
A few months later, Garye made it official by committing to the Bulls as part of their 2011 recruiting class.
Garye, a 6-foot-3, 200-pound safety at Lincoln High, becomes USF’s fourth public commitment. He selected USF over scholarship offers from Iowa State, Kentucky, Vanderbilt, FIU, Louisville and Illinois (among others).
“I liked the surroundings at USF,” Garye said. “When I went there for Junior Day, all the coaches there were all into the players’ academics. Every player had an Apple laptop to help them stay on top of all their school work. That impressed me.”
Garye said he was also impressed by first-year USF coach Skip Holtz.
“He loves to be with his players,” Garye said. “That’s all he talked about when I was down there. They’ve got real good chemistry.”
Garye joins former Lincoln teammate B.J. Daniels, who started at quarterback for the Bulls last season. Daniels and Garye were teammates in football and basketball at Lincoln.
“B.J. is a big reason why I picked USF,” Garye said.
Lincoln coach Yusuf Shakir said Garye is a “great fit” for the USF program.
Chiles High School are Flag Football District Champions
After two days of heated district flag football competition, The Chiles Lady Timberwolves emerged victorious by beating the previous three-time district and two-time state champion, Leon Lady Lions, 6-0, on Tuesday afternoon. Just one day earlier, the Lady Lions defeated the Lincoln Lady Trojans with the same score to advance to the finals. The Lady Timberwolves had no trouble advancing to the finals as they defeated the Rickard High Lady Raiders 26-3. As the rain cleared the 2010 district flag football game was underway at Rickards High School Field. The Lady Timberwolves set the pace for the rest of the game after they scored there first and only touchdown in the 2nd Quarter of the game. The Lady Lions were never able to recover as they dropped two touchdown passes in the end-zone in the second half. The Lady Timberwolves will play Jacksonville Raines on Saturday, May 1st at 4:00pm at Chiles High School.

Lincoln High football player killed in car crash
By Aimee Sachs • DEMOCRAT STAFF WRITER • January 25, 2010
Nobody would have guessed that the Florida-Georgia Border War all-star game in Thomasville, Ga. on Jan. 9 would be Lincoln High defensive lineman Trey Watson’s final game. But a two-car crash on Interstate 10 on Saturday night ended Watson’s life.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Watson, 18, was killed when the car he was riding in crossed the center median on Interstate 10 near Olson Road and collided with a vehicle driven by Michael Wade, 57, of Okeechobee. The driver of the car in which Watson was riding, W.L. Zaire C. Smith, 18, was listed in serious condition at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital, the FHP reported. TMH did not have a record of his condition on Sunday evening. Smith graduated from Lincoln in 2009 and was a defensive lineman for the Trojans, Lincoln football coach Yusuf Shakir said.
Just last weekend, Watson took an official visit to Jacksonville University. Area coaches had voted him to the Tallahassee Democrat’s All-Big Bend defensive first team. Shakir said Watson was “overjoyed” when he found out. But sadly, Watson will not appear in the photo with his peers later this week.
Shakir held a meeting with the Lincoln football team Sunday afternoon to let the players express their feelings.
“They’re all in shock,” Shakir said. “They’re so young. A lot of kids haven’t experienced this.”
Several of Watson’s teammates — as well as friends on other area teams — turned to their Facebook pages to express condolences. A Facebook group in Watson’s honor was created on Sunday with more than 550 members joining by Sunday evening.

4Q PLAYOFF CENTRAL: Both Lincoln and Godby Fall in 3rd Round Playoff Matchups
Round 3 of the Florida state playoffs featured the only two local-area teams remaining. Both Lincoln and Godby faced top ranked undefeated teams with high powered offenses loaded with plenty of stud athletes.
For the Lincoln Trojans the challenge of advancing to the next round against an undefeated Niceville proved to be too much as the Trojans fell to the Eagles, 45 – 31. Lead by senior QB #11 R. White, Lincoln proved early that their pass-offense would be a threat to the Eagles. In a display of offensive fire-power, both Lincoln and Niceville traded scores and lead changes several times during the course of the game. Only in the final few minutes was the ball-game decided as Niceville’s highly touted RB #24 R. Finch scored the final touchdown that put the Trojans away.
Meanwhile, on the Space Coast, Godby was giving undefeated the Cocoa Tigers all that they could handle. The Cougars looked poised to pull off the upset, as they seemingly took control of the ball-game on two costly Cocoa fumbles and stiffled the Tiger rushing attack for nearly the entire game. The entire 3rd quarter and nearly the first 8 minutes of the 4th quarter belonged soley to Godby and their defense lead by senior DT #99 J. Lee. However, one simple screen pass changed everything as Tiger RB #4 C. Bouie raced 91 yards to set up the go ahead touchdown for the Tigers. In an almost cruel twist of fate, Godby again had their season ended by a single point, as they were edged by Cocoa, 17 – 16 on the final touchdowns extra point attempt.

4Q GAMENIGHT: Playoff Central – 2nd Round Matchups and area Scores
It’s round 2 in the state playoffs! Godby and Lincoln have prevailed in their 2nd round games with wins, while Jefferson County and Florida High weren’t so lucky. The Lincoln Trojans capitalized early on Columbia turnovers, to outlast the Tigers, 20-14, and advance to the Class 4A regional championship. Godby’s 4 fumble recoveries against the Baker County Wildcats sealed the 26-19 win and captured the Class 2A region 1 title.

Things didn’t fair so well for the Jefferson County Tigers, who were having one of the best seasons since their 1991 state title run. The Tigers were bested by a pesky Hawthorne offense who managed to out score Jefferson County, 38 -28. Florida High, meanwhile, was dominated by Pensacola Catholic, who held the Seminoles to just 7 points in a 44-7 loss in Pensacola.

4Q GAMENIGHT: Madison County 38 Lincoln 21 Final
4Quartersonline.com was in attendance at Boot Hill here in Madison County as the Cowboys pounded the Lincoln Trojans, 38 – 21. The Cowboys were led on offense by RB #20 M. McDaniel, who caused plenty of problems for the Trojan defense all throughout the first half.
Click here to view photo gallery >>>
However, after McDaniel suffered a lower leg injury in the 3rd quarter, Madison County showed it’s depth when a host of other playmakers continued to drive the offense. Cowboy QB #8 K. Singletary, RB #4 RB X. Brown, and RB #6 W. McKnight provided plenty of offensive power and made things easy for the Madison County defense. The Trojans, however, made sure to not leave Boot Hill without a fight. Lincoln QB #11 R. White was a bright spot on an otherwise dismal night for the Trojans. White was responsible for all 3 of the Trojan scores, as he threw for 2 touchdowns and ran for another. The high-powered Madison offense proved too much for Lincoln in the end as penalties plagued the Trojan offense early in the ball game.

The Trojans managed to grind out a 16 – 6 win over the Seminoles in a very wet and hard-fought game last Thursday night. The soggy turf at Gene Cox Stadium added another hurdle for both squads as plenty of big hits were exchanged.
