The War of the Borders All-Star football game between Florida and Georgia was held last Saturday in Moultrie, Georgia at 2:00 pm, but for the 60 players on each team it was more than that. At 10 am the players where treated to a hardy breakfast prepared by the Colquitt County H.S cafeteria staff ,great food I might add. This event feed the players physically, mentally and spiritually with a cast awesome speakers that spoke on subjects ranging from recruiting, God and family life. Players on both sides left the morning activities excited and ready to play.
The game begin with both teams struggling turning the ball over on their opening possession but Georgia recovered a fumble deep in Florida territory that lead to the first score of the game early in the first quarter with a 32 yard Field by Dan Lenze (McIntosh)Trinity. Team Florida lead by the running of Taylor County QB Eli Grambling and the passing of Chiles signal caller Tres Penny march 80 yards culminating with a 1 yard run by Jefferson County tailback Alphonso Footman giving Team Florida a 7-3 lead.
Field Goals by Team Florida ‘s Kicker Conner Smith (Wakulla) , Team Georgia’s Dan Lenze and a 78 yard interception return by Jonathan Esther(Thomas County central) made the score 16-10 Georgia. Then lightening struck in the third quarter when Team Florida’s Offensive MVP Wakulla’s Will Thomas exploded off tackle 28 yards to give Florida the lead 20-16. Team Florida Held on to the lead behind the running of Thomas and Footman and rock hard defense anchored by Florida’s Defensive MVP William Sweet.
